ReThink the Scroll

You don’t have to quit. You just have to get intentional about why you’re there in the first place.

What’s Actually Happening When You Scroll

Mindless Scrolling

  • Quick dopamine hits that fade fast
  • Comparison that drains self-worth
  • Anxiety disguised as entertainment
  • Time loss without fulfillment
  • A brain trained to need constant stimulation

Intentional Use

  • Connection on your terms
  • Information you actually sought out
  • Creative inspiration, not passive consumption
  • Time spent, not time lost
  • A sense of control over your attention
Key insight: Your brain can’t tell the difference between a real reward and a digital one. Every notification, like, and autoplay trains your reward system. The algorithm isn’t neutral — it’s optimized to keep you there as long as possible. That’s not a personal failure. It’s an engineering decision.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Before You Open It

Why am I picking this up?
What do I actually want?
Am I bored, stressed, or avoiding something?
How long do I want to be here?

While You’re In It

Am I getting what I came for?
How does my body feel right now?
Is this adding to me or draining me?
Did I mean to still be here?

When You Put It Down

How do I feel compared to before?
Did I get what I came for?
Would I make the same choice again?
What did I trade that time for?

Why cold turkey doesn’t work: Quitting completely creates a shame cycle — you fail once, feel bad about it, and use that shame as a reason to give up entirely. Harm reduction works differently: it meets you where you are, makes small adjustments, and builds awareness over time. One intentional choice is a win. You’re not failing — you’re learning your patterns.
