How to ask your therapist for what you need
Practical language for bringing up fit, feedback, boundaries, and unmet needs in therapy.
Starting points
- Name what you have noticed
- Describe what would feel more useful
- Ask how your therapist understands the concern
What you may say
I want to talk about how therapy is going. I need more direct feedback, and I want to know whether that fits how you work.
Signs of fit
- Your questions are welcomed
- Feedback can be discussed without punishment
- Goals and expectations become clearer
If the fit is not right
It is reasonable to ask for a referral or choose another provider. A mismatch does not mean therapy cannot help.
